Big Cakes, Little Maggots

Today was our planned rest day and as I mentioned in an earlier post we would either climb Skiddaw or amble around Derwent Water for 9 and a half miles. Mercifully, we went for the latter option which allowed for a lovely lie in until 9.30, then a few domestic chores-clothes washing and so on and then a fat boy fry up in Keswick before setting off around the lake. Richard decided not to join us and spent the day shopping.

The weather was gorgeous-a mild day with plenty of sunshine and no rain. We walked anti clockwise so skirted Cat Bells, yesterday's adversary, first and then passed through Manesty Woods before stopping off at the half way point and having tea and cake at a little tea room next to the Borrowdale Hotel. I had the biggest piece of Coffee and Walnut cake that you've ever seen (photo below) but it set me up nicely for the second half of the walk.

It was a wonderful way to spend our rest day and not too demanding-tomorrow's walk is a 15 miler and climbs to an altitude of 2000 feet so it was probably wise not to summit Skiddaw.

One moment worth a mention was when Jacko, having a sneaky wee against a tree beside the lake, was startled by a middle aged couple-the lady remarked to her husband that Jacko must have been a fisherman because he appeared to be trying to attach a maggot to a hook!

The plan for this evening is to retire to a convivial inn (actually we're already in one!) then back to the site for a shower before having a slap up meal at a little Italian restaurant  only a 10 minute stroll away.

Enjoy the photos.

Not feeling the coffee and nut cake eh-uh :-(8 but....that does like a perfect brew! I'm most jealous of your resident girly girl (Holyoak) who spent the day shopping! Well jel!!!! :-D

Ooooo an I-talian tonight...carbonara mmmmmm. Hope you have a great time. Can't wait to hear what you all ate...(hopefully yours won't repeat on you like the all day brekkie in a tin) :-D

Purposefully not going to comment on Jacko's maggot...the less said there the better...

Good luck for the big one tomorrow! :-)
